What to Do Before a Parent Has Knee Replacement Surgery
Caring for your parent after knee replacement surgery is likely to be a difficult job. Your parent will probably be in pain, tired, and frustrated by their inability to get around on their own. Being prepared for the challenges associated with being a family caregiver to someone who has had knee surgery can help you get ahead of the game and make the job a little easier.
Setting Up the House
Getting the house where your parent will be staying after knee surgery ready will be a huge help once your parent comes home. Think about the things your parent will have to do and ways that you can make those things easier, such as clearing away clutter that might be hard for your parent to navigate around. Here are more suggestions for getting the house ready:
- If there is not a bathroom on the same floor where your parent will be most of the time, arrange to have a portable commode in place before the surgery. These can be purchased from medical supply stores or online.
- Make sure your parent’s bed is low enough that their feet touch the floor when they sit on the edge. This will make it easier for them to get out of bed. You may even wish to rent a hospital bed to use during recovery, especially if your parent’s bedroom is not on the main floor. A hospital bed can be set up in a more convenient location.
- Set up the room your parent will be in the most with everything they might need, such as a telephone, television, extra pillows for elevating the leg, writing materials to write down any questions your parent may have for the doctor, and bandages or other care items for the knee.
Other Preparations
If you do not have a family member or friend who can be with your parent during recovery from knee replacement surgery, it may be wise to hire an elder care provider through an agency. An elder care provider can help your parent to safely get to the bathroom or other areas of the house. They can also assist your parent with bathing and grooming. An elder care provider can even prepare meals for your parent and do some light housework.
In addition to getting the house ready, it is also a good idea for you to meet with your parent’s doctor before they are released from the hospital. Go over all medications and special care instructions. Ask about things to watch for and report, such as inflammation or redness. Be sure to ask the doctor any questions you may have.
