Five Appointments Your Parents Need to Make and Keep in 2019
When life gets busy, it’s easy to delay appointments. Talk to your parents about making sure they get important check-ups taken care of in 2019. Here are the five appointments that they need to make for their well-being and peace of mind.
Consultation With Estate Planning Attorney
Lawyers do cost money, but most allow one free consultation. Your parents should sit down for a free consultation to make sure they have considered everything they need to think about in terms of estate planning.
Some of the things people don’t think about until it’s too late are advanced directives and designating a power of attorney for medical care and for a property. Creating a will or updating an old one are also important for your parents to consider.
Dental Visit
Gum disease is a risk at any age. It’s more likely in older adults. Your mom and dad should go for cleanings twice a year. If they haven’t recently seen a dentist, it’s a good time to get caught up.
The reasons you want to discover and start treating gum disease sooner rather than later is that it leads to tooth loss. This can make it hard for your parent to eat nutritious meals. Preventative dental care is essential to avoiding gum disease.
Eye Exam
If your parents haven’t had their vision checked within the past year, they need to. In addition to checking that the current glasses prescription is valid, an eye doctor checks for common eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. You also want to make sure your parents can see well enough to continue driving.
Hearing Test
Doctors may do a quick hearing test during an annual health exam, but an in-depth hearing test is often ignored. If your parents work around loud machinery or attended a lot of loud concerts or outdoor events like car races, they should have their hearing checked. If there are problems, hearing aids can restore hearing and make it safer for your parents to drive.
Yearly Wellness Check
Your parents see their doctor at least once a year. The doctor will take their blood pressure, pulse, and ask and answer questions about how they’re feeling. Most appointments end with a blood draw that will check blood sugar levels, liver and kidney function, and cholesterol levels.
It may be hard for you to schedule and drive your parent to every appointment. Caregivers can include transportation and help with scheduling. Let a caregiver help your parents get caught up on all of these appointments. Call an elder care agency to learn more about the ways caregivers help seniors age at home.
